Architectural photographer Iwan Baan has captured the new Zaryadye Park. Commissioned by Moscow Chief Architect Sergey Kuznetsov, 13 hectares of green space were designed by an international team led by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Hargreaves Associates and Citymakers.

Aerial photographs show the park’s unique location including also the so-called “floating bridge” which stretches without support over the Moscow River and its embankment before looping back to the parkland. 3 to 4 thousand visitors can simultaneously be on the 70m long observation deck.

Photos taken inside the park offer a glimpse into the landscape which Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the park’s master planners, describe as “wild urbanism”. The studio who created also New York City’s HighLine is known for merging historic city streets with wild natural habitats.

Four different areas representing Russia’s main geographic zones – tundra, steppe, forest and wetlands – feature the typical micro-climates of each zone celebrating the amplitude of regions across the country.

The sectional overlay facilitates active and passive climate-control strategies that allow visitors to enjoy the park through all seasons. Natural zones provide places of gathering, repose and observation, in concert with performance spaces and enclosed cultural pavilions.

Works by Arctic ice artist Alexander Ponomarev will be on show in an ice cave where the temperature will be kept below freezing year-round. Zaryadye park features also a large outdoor amphi-theatre and a Philharmonic Hall built into the hillsides which will open its doors in April.

Sergei Kuznetsov’s Zaryadye Park Pavilion was the first element to open to the public with the aim to provide a virtual overview of the park’s development. The central chamber is wallpapered in QR codes containing maps, designs, photographs and other information about the park.
